Materials You’ll Need

  • Sport weight yarn (I used Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/6):
✦ 2 skeins of Oatmilk (background)
✦ 1 skein of Black (lettering)
  • 3.75mm / Size F crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Towel + pins for blocking
  • A foot-long stick or dowel for hanging

👉 With these materials, the finished tapestry measures approximately 11 x 13 inches.

Special Notes Before You Start

  • This project is made entirely with single crochet stitches. At the end of each row, turn your work and chain 1 to begin the next row.
  • Odd rows = right side (RS) of your work.
  • Even rows = wrong side (WS) of your work.
  • Blocking is essential to neaten edges—pin to a towel, wet, and let dry overnight.
  • Both a written color block chart and a visual tapestry chart can be followed, depending on your preference.

How to Do Color Changes in Tapestry Crochet

When switching from one color to another on the wrong side of your work, carry yarn strands neatly across the back to keep the front clean.

  1. On the last stitch of your current color, stop before pulling through the final loop.
  2. Bring in your new color, pull it through the loops on your hook.
  3. Continue crocheting with the new color, carrying the unused yarn under your stitches.

Chart Instructions

If you like to work tapestry crochet from the chart, here it is! You can also use it as reference as you follow the color block instructions to ensure everything is looking correct.

Color Block Instructions

Foundation Row

  • Chain 51.
  • Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook.
  • Single crochet across the row.

This sets up your base for the tapestry. Remember to turn your work after this row and each subsequent row, then begin with a chain 1. You will be working the tapestry from the bottom up.

Rows 1-20

Finishing Touches

  1. Once all rows are complete, weave in ends securely.
  2. Block your work: pin to a towel, wet thoroughly, and leave to dry overnight. This step evens out stitches and straightens edges.

Adding the Hanger

  1. Cut a strand of black yarn about 40 inches long.
  2. Sew it through every other stitch along the top over your dowel or stick. Weave in ends tightly.
  3. Cut another strand about 20 inches long, tie each end to the stick edges, and your tapestry is ready to hang!
